JetBlue emergency landing, Pope visits Latin America, Wildfire devastates Colorado

Everyday on the CitizenTube channel (and @CitizenTube on Twitter), along with our curation partners @storyful, we look at how the top news stories are covered on YouTube. Each week we post a weekly recap of the top news stories of the week, as seen through the lens of both citizen-reported footage and professional news coverage.

  • We viewed appalling scenes in the air over America as a JetBlue flight was forced to make an emergency landing after the pilot was restrained for "erratic behavior".
  • We saw the Pope endear himself to Latin America, donning a sombrero in Mexico and meeting Fidel Castro in Cuba.
  • We witnessed devastating wildfires in Colorado force the evacuation of hundreds of residents, with at least one death reported.
  • We observed a sense of 'petrol panic' as motorists in the UK and beyond were worried by rising oil prices and a potential fuel shortage because of strikes.
  • We followed the GOP candidates as the presidential race took yet another turn, with Rick Santorum winning his 11th state of the campaign in Louisiana.
  • We marked a successful run-off presidential election in Senegal, won by Macky Sall amid many economic challenges in the country.
  • We saw no let up in the controversy surrounding the Trayvon Martin case, as Trayvon's frustrated parents took their plea for justice to a Congressional forum on neighborhood watch groups and racial profiling.
  • We overheard US President Barack Obama talking about a future after the next presidential election during a 3-day tour in South Korea that focused on securing nuclear stability in the region.
  • And finally, we watched one man go where few have gone before, as Titanic director James Cameron plunged to the deepest point on Earth in his submarine: the Deepsea Challenger.
Come back to see the news unfold on YouTube.

Create your own video duels with YouTube Slam

Last year we started experimenting with the idea that you could find the next big thing on YouTube. YouTube Slam pits two videos against each other, where you get points for picking the crowd favorite. In just a few months, hundreds of thousands of you cast more than a million votes on Slams we created, and today we’re turning the game controls over to you.

You can now turn any of your playlists into a YouTube Slam. Play solo, share the YouTube link with your friends or even play together in a Google+ Hangout. Here’s how to do it:
  1. Make a playlist with the videos you want to include in the Slam (you’ll need at least two videos and they have to be public), or choose a playlist you have already
  2. Go to www.youtube.com/slam/create
  3. Click the “Create Slam” button next to one of your playlists. It’ll look like this:

When you click “Play Slam” you’ll be taken into your game, and we’ll show the highest scoring videos and players on the leaderboard page of your Slam. Click “View the winners” at any time to check it out.

Want to get your friends involved? You can now play custom or existing Slams live with friends inside a Google+ Hangout by clicking the “Play Slam with your friends” link. You can also share the YouTube Slam link with friends directly to get more people playing. If you feel like the Slam has been settled, you can remove it at any time.

Slam is still a work in progress, and we want to hear your feedback. Let us know what you think in the comments below or by clicking the “Feedback” link on any Slam.

YouTube Shows comes to Korea

Over the last year Korean TV stations have been opening up YouTube channels and offering a wide variety and deep catalog of their shows—everything from weekly dramas to K-Pop musical programs. The main three terrestrial broadcasters all have multiple channels with their top shows — KBS (Main Channel, Drama, Entertainment, KBS Life, Documentary, KBS world), MBC (Kpop, Entertainment, Drama, MBC World), and SBS (Entertainment, Drama, FreeVOD, Culture). YouTube also has many top cable shows such as Pororo from Iconix animation studio and Sonbadak TV.

To help you find Korean TV on YouTube, viewers in Korea now have a new Shows page organizing all programs available. For the rest of the world, you can still find the shows through youtube.com/shows/other-languages, but note that not all programs are available in all countries.

On the Shows page in Korea, you’ll find new programs like Infinite Challenge (무한도전) and classics like My Lovely Sam-Soon (내 이름은 김삼순), with subtitles in English, Spanish and other languages. The new Shows pages also gives you key information about the program, such as a cast list and credits.

In many cases, each episode is divided into clips, but there’s no need to click on each video one at a time. The first video selected will automatically link to the next video and that one to the next. So once you start watching, you can easily flow to the end of the show.

If you have a favorite TV program, subscribe to the channel so that you’ll be updated on your homepage whenever there’s a new episode. We’ll be adding more programs from more stations in the future, so check back frequently.

AnyoneButMeWebSeries is March’s YouTube partner On The Rise

Congratulations to AnyoneButMeWebSeries! The award-winning web series is our featured “On The Rise” partner for March and takes the stage in the “Spotlight” section of the YouTube homepage today.

Shot on location in NYC and LA and written and produced by Susan Miller and Tina Cesa Ward, Anyone But Me centers around gay, straight and ethnically diverse teenagers who deal with all-too-common questions about identity and modern relationships. Throughout the series, viewers may identify with the emotional struggles of moving, relationship changes and being true to yourself. The third and final season just wrapped, and you can watch the complete series on their YouTube channel. Check out the video below for more background on the series and its history:

Here are a few words from the show’s executives, Tina and Susan:
We love making drama. And we love making it on the web. It’s as if the gods gave us a piece of this huge creative territory and said “Own it. Plant weird, wonderful new things. Do what you want here.” As creators, we couldn’t ask for more. Anyone But Me is a rare thing in the indie television world. For one thing, we don’t have zombies. (Alas!) We get off on writing about real humans and their relationships. Anyone But Me launched in 2008. After our second season, we had a never been done before Webathon, and the fans funded us for Season 3. So many people had our back. We got press in Fast Company. Salon.com, The LA Times, Tubefilter, AfterEllen. And we collected a lot of cool awards along the way. But it’s thanks to the passion of our fans that we’re here! We’re grateful to YouTube for this honor and the opportunity to connect with people we hope will become new fans. (Oh, and if you subscribe to our channel you not only get 26 episodes of our show & some fun video extras, we also link you to other shows we like. What could be bad about that?)

If you’ve enjoyed this monthly On The Rise blog series and want to see more rising YouTube partners, check out our On The Rise Channel. Keep an eye out for next month’s blog post, as your channel may be the next one On The Rise!

Google makes great films available in France

Cross-posted on the Google France Blog

Earlier this month, we introduced Google Play, a digital entertainment destination where you can find, enjoy and share your favorite apps on your Android phone or tablet in France. Today we’re adding movies for rent to Google Play for people in France, including hundreds of full-length feature films from major Hollywood and French studios. These movies will also be available for rent on YouTube.

We’ve got some fantastic films to keep everyone entertained through the upcoming summer months and beyond. From blockbusters like Les Aventures de Tintin: Le Secret de la Licorne and Les Schtroumpfs, to new releases such as Twilight Chapitre 4 : Révélation 1ère partie, Le Stratege, The Thing, and Drive, and even French classics like Le Bal Des Actrices and La Grotte Des Rêves Perdus, you can find many of your favourite movies in high quality available to rent now on Google Play and YouTube. To make these films available, we’ve partnered with many independent French studios including Cinéma(s) à la Demande, EuropaCorp, M6 Video / SND, Under The Milky Way, UniversCiné and Wild Side as well as major film studios such as Disney Europe, NBC Universal and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment France.

On Android phones and tablets, you can rent films from the Google Play Store and start watching them instantly in the Google Play Movies app. Movies can also be downloaded to the device so they’re available for viewing during the rental period without an internet connection. On the web, you can rent and watch movies on the Google Play website (play.google.com/movies) or on YouTube (youtube.com/movies). Using your Google Account, you can rent the same movies across both Google Play and YouTube.

Movies are available at competitive pricing, with new releases starting at €3.99 for standard definition and €4.99 for high definition and library titles at €2.99 for standard definition and €3.99 for high definition. For most movies, viewers will have 30 days to begin watching their rental, and, once started, 48 hours to finish.

The concept of cinema was invented in France -- the Lumière brothers screened their film The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station in 1895. So it’s exciting to be bringing this great content to our users in France through Google Play and YouTube.

Follow the Burma Elections on YouTube

On Sunday, April 1, millions of voters in Burma will cast a ballot in the parliamentary by-elections. This year, Burma is opening its doors to media and election observers alike to document the election proceedings in real-time. With support from Google Ideas, our friends at the J-School News Lab, a real-time reporting training program for Burmese journalists, will be curating a Burma Elections news channel on YouTube. Here, they will feature original reporting from J-School journalists on the ground, Burmese media outlets, and international broadcasters.

Until recently, Burma has been more or less closed to the outside world, making it difficult to find news and information about what was happening inside the country. We’re pleased that people around the world will be able follow what’s happening as Burmese voters head to the polls on election day.

Visit youtube.com/burmaelections for the latest news and developments.

Free eBooks - Esther: The Beauty of Courageous Submission and Ruth: A Woman of Virtue

Free eBooks for Facebook Fans!

Life Application Bible Study: Esther: The Beauty of Courageous Submission

At ten chapters and 114 pages long, this is the perfect eBook for Bible study at home!

The book of Esther is a beautiful story of one woman who courageously gave of herself for the will of God and His people. Women like you and I can glean inspiration from her strength, wisdom and her dignity as we face our fears and boldly stand before the throne of our God.

The events in the story of Esther reveal the plot of one man who desired to have God’s people destroyed, and the courage of a woman who stepped out in faith to turn that plan around.

Esther gives us something to celebrate as it chronicles the deliverance of God’s chosen people, the Jews. It is also a great lesson on Biblical submission for both women and the church in general. It inspires believers to trust God's wisdom and timing, and to stand strong in the face of persecution.
“Righteousness” is one of the main themes in the book. This story teaches us that righteousness is imputed to us. It’s given to us freely through faith in Jesus Christ.

Life Application Bible Study: Ruth, A Woman of Virtue

Enjoy an in-depth study on the book of Ruth. Learn about the relationship between the Moabites and the Jews and the underlying conflict between the two cultures. Dig into scripture as we talk about Levitical laws and customs of the day. Read about the Jewish feasts surrounding the story and find out what their significance is to our faith. Find out why Ruth was the only woman in scripture referred to as "virtuous," and glean wisdom that is applicable to your life today.*

Do You Have What it Takes to be the ‘Next’ great YouTube Vlogger?

Vlogging, or video blogging, videos are some of the most popular on YouTube. And rightfully so--they’re one of the few types of videos that literally anyone can create: all you have to do is sit in front of camera, share words of wisdom (okay, wisdom not always required), and upload the video. From accounts of political struggle in the Middle East to fan reactions of newly-released music videos to testaments of personal discovery, the intimate act of vlogging can take many shapes and resonate with audiences around the world.

A few weeks ago, we asked YouTube creators what form of content we should tackle as part of our Next Creator program, a development initiative to help promising creators find their voices, improve their skills, and build their audiences. You resoundingly responded with calls for YouTube Next Vlogger.

Starting today through April 18, applications will be open for sixteen promising vloggers to take part in three months of intimate educational workshops held on Google+ Hangouts. Each vlogger will receive $5,000 worth of video equipment and more than $10,000 worth of promotion on and off YouTube. Participants will also receive mentoring from industry experts, such as iJustine, one of the most successful vloggers and content creators on YouTube!

YouTube creators from Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States are eligible. If previous Next Creator participants are any indication, the Next Vloggers will be an incredibly talented and engaging group. We can’t wait to introduce them to you on April 30, but they need to apply first!

Vlog on!

"Easy" Isn't Worth the Cost of an Unhappy Marriage

Guest Contributor, Ashleigh Slater

Tears of disappointment threatened to flow as I listened to the words my husband Ted was saying. "I’m having dinner with a client right after work, so I should be home by 7 p.m. Can I bring the Tylenol home then? Things are just really busy here and I don’t think I can get away before then."

Just a half hour earlier I’d called Ted asking if he could use his lunch hour to pick up a bottle of infant’s Tylenol and bring it home. Our two-month old had received five vaccinations that morning and I’d arrived home to discover we were completely out of the pain reliever. Not eager to pack three young kids in our mini van a second time that day, I called him in desperation.

My knight in shining armor hesitantly agreed to come to my rescue. But within 30 minutes, things had changed. He could not—or would not, as I was quick to think—come to my rescue after all.

"I’ll go get it," I snapped, not trying to cover the disappointment in my voice. "I don’t want her to have to wait all day for the medicine. She might get a fever and since we’re going out of town tomorrow, I don’t want to risk that."

Hanging up the phone, I told my four-year-old and two-year-old it was time to go to the store.

"Why?" my oldest asked.

Frustrated, I answered, "Because Papa can’t go to the store. So we have to."

"I don’t want to go," she replied.

My sentiments exactly.

While I’m normally careful not to speak poorly of their papa, I gave in to my anger, deciding not to guard my tongue. "Neither do I. But we have to go. Believe me, Mommy’s not too happy with Papa right now."

Not too happy was an understatement! Inside I was fuming. On a scale of 1 to 10, my upset odometer was nearing 11. I couldn’t believe he wasn’t able to sneak away for forty-five minutes to help me. Forty-five minutes! To me, it seemed like nothing in the scheme of an eight-to nine-hour workday. Especially since tonight he had a work-related dinner and would be home later than normal, leaving me to handle the evening meal and possibly bedtime on my own.

As I helped the girls put on their shoes and buckled them into their car seats, I was determined Ted would hear about this when he got home.

Yet, as I drove to the store, the Lord gently spoke to my hard heart.

Quietly, He reminded me of the conversations Ted and I had had concerning his work load. Ted had mentioned several times how each day he felt like he was just chipping away at all the work before him. He’d already skipped lunch several days this week because of work demands. Not only that, but he was taking tomorrow off, leaving him only today to finish all that needed to be done before the weekend.

My hard heart started to soften. As it did, I was reminded of something I try hard to practice: holding my fire.

Holding my fire, especially in my marriage, isn’t easy. What is easy is to allow myself to embrace anger and frustration when I feel wronged. What is easy is to let my husband "have it" when his choices in a particular situation don’t please me and my preferences. But many times, easy isn’t worth the cost it can bring: a conflict-ridden, unhappy marriage.

Instead, it’s the hard work of self-control that helps to produce the fruit of a happy marriage. Self-control to determine whether a certain incident—such as not bringing home infant’s Tylenol over lunch—is or isn’t worth the conflict. Self-control to watch my words, yes, but also a heart attitude that births those words. Self-control to exercise grace and understanding … when I feel anything but.

Ultimately, self-control to walk in wisdom about when to hold my fire.

My thoughts turned to the story of Queen Esther. This biblical heroine is an example of a woman who walked in wisdom in the area of holding her fire.

When Esther’s cousin, Mordecai, informed her of Haman’s evil plot to exterminate her people, she didn’t rush out to approach the King or lash out in anger against Haman. Instead, she held her fire, instructing Mordecai:

Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my young women will also fast as you do. Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish." (Esther 4:16)

When faced with a life and death, time-sensitive situation, she took the time to turn to the Lord. Esther didn’t rush to address the situation in her own strength and in her own timing. She knew she would need the Lord’s favor and wisdom when approaching the King. And when she did eventually visit the King, she didn’t simply blurt out the problem. Esther waited for the right opportunity. She’s a perfect picture of self-control.

Though the battles I face are smaller than Esther’s, I can still learn from her. Her story teaches me that walking in self-control is a God-given safeguard. Self-control in my words and actions and timing can make all the difference in my relationship with Ted.

At the end of the day, I decided to hold my fire over the bottle of infant’s Tylenol. Rather than confront Ted about it, I met him with the grace and understanding that flows from a self-controlled heart.

Building Faith-Focused Support

There are few things more damaging than the influence of close friends who aren’t in step with God. I’ve seen this happen in my own life, which is why I strive to surround my daughter with Christian influence. She’s fourteen-years-old and soon she’ll be participating in more activities on her own, like going to the mall with a friend, or babysitting at a house with unsupervised access to a computer and phone. When she’s out of my sight I need to know that I have given her the necessary tools to handle herself appropriately...

Introducing YouTube with a Peruvian flavor

Peru is a multicultural and multilingual country, the result of the merger of different influences and customs throughout the centuries. It has a cultural abundance, from its literature, music and dance to its incredible cuisine, famous worldwide for its variety and originality. Taking all this into account, it's not surprising to find great examples of this culture's expressions on videos that anyone could enjoy at YouTube, such as Marca Perú, PerúTubers, Alicia and Sucedió en el Perú.

We want to share even more of the culture of Peru with you, so today we’re kicking off a local version of YouTube in Peru: youtube.pe. The country becomes number 43 globally where a local YouTube version is available, and sixth in Latin America together with Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Chile.

YouTube Peru will give more exposure to local talent, as well as make the experience of discovering, sharing and commenting on videos have a local flavor, making them more relevant with local tastes. Peruvians can now browse videos by category or by popularity and find local talent easily, without missing anything that also happens on a global scale.

We can’t wait to see how YouTube Peru comes to life and acquires its own personality. So we invite you to start a channel to upload your best moments and talents to YouTube, and share those of others who are celebrating their world through video.

3 Ways to Achieve Unity in Your Marriage - And a Titus 2sday Link up!!

Drawn from my archives

The tagline on this blog is “Empowering Wives to Joyfully Serve.” To some the word “serve” is music to the ears, but to others it’s detestable that I’d even suggest such a notion. To them, the idea of women serving in the home is archaic, old-fashioned, and out-dated. I say it’s refreshing!

The notion of 50/50, where couples give only as much as they are given is not only self-centered--it lacks strength, because what see here are two halves becoming one whole. In order to build a relationship that has life-lasting results, we need the strength of two complete people coming together in unity where each one esteems the other higher than themselves, and where each one is willing to give more than they take.

When the going gets rough—and it will at times—love requires 100 percent of our heart. I saw that first hand last year when after 60 years of marriage my parents discovered that my dad had numerous brain tumors. My mom who is suffering with COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) took care of him day and night. As I witness her labour of love I saw the value in serving others.

Putting my own thoughts aside, let’s take a look a Philippians 2, where we are instructed on how to achieve love and unity. Here we see three steps that empower us to joyfully serve:

  1. Give up any selfish ambition or conceit, including your need to be right.
  2. Humbly value others higher than yourself.
  3. Don’t focus on your own interests, but be sensitive to others.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. ~ Philippians 2:3-4, NIV

Humbly serving your family might be archaic to you, but for me it’s based on timeless wisdom that offers life-lasting results.

Darlene

updates from the studio- some big news!

5023976230_f1709cb1e8_b

I have a confession to make- I've been keeping lots of secrets over here! And while I cannot reveal everything at the moment- I have some big news that I've been dying to share! My husband and I have been working on a dream and we recently put that dream into motion- we are leaving Southern California and moving to my hometown on the Oregon Coast in June.

IMG_5342
We are giddy and excited and more than ready to start a new chapter that will involve a more simplified lifestyle and the ability for both of us to be at home and more flexible to raise our daughter. This decision has been in the works for years and it has involved lots of questioning, soul searching, and figuring out the right time. We have known that Southern California, while wonderful in its own right, has not felt like the perfect fit for us. We both ache for the rugged outdoors, the rain, the seasons, and a much simpler way of life.

As if it's not wonderful enough to have the opportunity to raise a family in a small coastal community and be near my family (can you say free babysitters?!) but the cherry on top is that I will be opening a studio space to work from and a place to host a variety of classes and small retreats. This represents another dream I’ve held close to my heart: that I can share the wonders of the Oregon Coast and its unique inspiration with you.

In the weeks and months to come I will be sharing more details and announcing the schedule of live classes at the new space AND I will be taking all of you, my dear readers along for this adventure...stay tuned!

in not so big news- I have been hard at work on my next online class and I will be announcing the details later this week!

How Can I Forgive Myself?

Dear Darlene,

I need some advice. One day I got a message from a guy I had met a few months before. I knew his wife through family and she had mentioned several times that they were filing for divorce because they couldn't stand each other anymore, so I felt justified in being his friend. If I had been any friend at all I would have been pushing him back toward his wife, telling him to fight for his marriage, and cutting contact, but I didn't. I couldn't, because I NEEDED him in a way I had never needed anyone. I needed him to validate me. I needed someone, ANYONE to want me.

Within a couple of months we were much more than best friends and I knew it. We were towing a very blurry line and it didn't take much to push us over to the wrong side. In 2009, at 19-years-old, I broke the one vow I had kept to God and to myself. I slept with a man who was not my husband, and worse than that, a man who was someone else's husband. I have never felt so much hatred toward myself than I did after that. Eventually she found out about the affair and he moved in with me. She had been considering marriage counseling, which of course I didn't know, and she was heartbroken over the betrayal she felt. She and I talked about everything because I felt I at least owed her that. I apologized profusely but I knew she wouldn't be able to forgive me just as I knew I'd never forgive myself. She still hates me, and I want her to. I can't defend a single decision I made because I KNEW it was wrong.

This past October I married that man. I wish I could say there is a happy ending because I hate a sad love story as much as the next person, but I can't. I can say that no matter how we found each other, I love him more than life itself. He is my best friend, my confidant, and a far better man today than he was the day we broke his vows. I just can't get past it. I can't let go. I feel like my decisions ruined the life of a woman who didn't deserve it and at the same time, broke me.

I hate that I disappointed God. I don't know how I let myself get that low. I know that I can never truly move forward, I will never truly be happy, until I can forgive myself but I can't because I know I don't deserve to be forgiven.

I have been finding my way back to God. I know that he never left me, I left him and I know that He has forgiven me because I have begged him for forgiveness. God's love is enfolding me. My life is changed but I am still miserable. I truly don't know what to do. How can I forgive myself for what I did? How can I forgive my husband for what he helped me do? I have said I forgive him, and I have even felt like I do, but there are always those moments when I fear that he will leave me the way he left her, and I hate myself for that but I feel like I hate him for that too. I know how awful this all sounds and I pray that you can find it in your heart not to judge me because of it, even as I judge myself.

Sincerely,

Conflicted & Unforgiven

Dear Conflicted & Unforgiven,

Thank you for your letter. I pray that my words may help in your healing process as you bring this burden to the feet of our Lord.

One line in your letter really stood out to me. It is this: "She still hates me, and I want her to. I can't defend a single decision I made because I KNEW it was wrong."

You are right and you are wrong. Here's why--what you did was very sinful and there is nothing you can say to defend that, we all know this, BUT grace and forgiveness is for sinners. If we only gave grace and forgiveness to the good people in our lives, what benefit would that be to anyone?

I know your pain. I went against everything that I believe and sinned against God and my husband. I felt sick about it, I felt useless and I felt dirty.

What I was feeling was the weight of my sin, but sin doesn't define who we are--God's grace does!

Without sin we have no need for grace. Do you know what I'm saying? Unless we can see the stain of our sin against the perfection of His immaculate grace we will never understand what a gift that grace truly is.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. ~ Ephesians 2:8, KJV

Look at the Bible and you'll see that God used people who were broken, sinful, and tarnished to build his kingdom.
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. ~ Matthew 16:18

Peter is the same man who later denied Jesus Christ hours before his death. Imagine that. Jesus vowed to build his church upon the faith of this believer and this very same man did the unthinkable by denying his Lord, and his friend as He was being led to His His crucifixion.

My servant Peter was not changed in a flash from a simple fisherman to a great leader and teacher, but through the very time of faithlessness -- through the very time of denial -- I was yet making him all that he should be. Impetuous spokesman as he always was, ready to lead the other disciples, Peter could never have been the after power he was, had he not learned his weakness. No man can save, unless he understands the sinner. (God Calling April 4th)

And finally, I'm reminded of something that my dad told me months before he died. They are simple yet powerful words, "God doesn't care about what you did yesterday. He's concerned about what you'll do today."

It sounds to me like God has offered you grace and a new beginning. You're standing at a crossroad in your life where you can either hang on to the pain of your past or move forward walking in grace.

If you'd like to read more about my experience, you can find it here: Grace is for Sinners.

You are loved by an almighty God,

Darlene Schacht
