Revive Your Marriage - Revive Your S*x Life

Yeah, I'm going there this week. I haven't really touched on this topic before and to be honest with you I normally prefer to leave it to the experts like Sheila (tolovehonorandvacuum.com). But sometimes we're called out of our comfort zone that we might share every aspect of the gospel.

The truth is, I'm kind of glad that I did. After mulling this over for a week I realized that s*x is an important part of every marriage and it's a topic that God wants us to address. After all, the Bible is rich when it comes to instruction on marriage, including s*xual relations between a husband and wife. The one that I often come back to is this:

Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. - 1 Corinthians 7:1-5

When you think about it, there are all kinds of reasons that women withhold s*x or lose that loving feeling, and from some of the questions I've received I see it goes both ways.

Since I'm speaking to an audience that's primarily women, let's examine a few of the things that drain us of our libido:

1. Stress. Family and finances can stress people out. And unfortunately stress has a way of zapping the zip out of your drive.

2. Exhaustion. Young children can be exhausting. After a long day of taking care of the kids, breastfeeding a baby, and climbing over mountains of laundry there are days when a woman just wants to walk into her room and fall into bed--for some sleep. But the minute we walk into the bedroom we see the look in our husband's eye that tells us we won't be sleeping anytime soon.

3. Anger. I remember a friend of mine had a huge fight with her husband once. He was so mad that he threw the phone book into the wall. About fifteen minutes later he walked into the bedroom and asked, "So I guess we're not doing it now, huh?" I had to laugh when she told me about that the next day, but the truth is that anger is a reality and it's hard to get in the mood when tempers (and phone books) are flying.

4. Low Self Esteem. I picked up a book once because the cover read, "Not Tonight Honey, Wait til I'm a Size Six." It made me giggle, because I've been there--felt that! Although my husband has been attracted to me regardless of what size I am or how bad my hair day might be, I don't always feel the same. If I'm carrying a few extra pounds or a few extra zits I don't feel anything close to s*xy. I don't know about you, but I think it's really hard to get in the mood when I'm not feeling s*xy.

I've listed just a few of the things that can dampen a s*x life, not to mention medication, menopause, and hormones. It's really a wonder there's any s*x in the world at all, isn't it?! *wink*

But here's the thing: God has a way of giving us just the right partner who learns to read our signals, knows what makes us tick, and provides what we need at just the right time. Doesn't He?

I love that about my husband. After 24 years he's learned to speak my language which might very well include the word "chocolate" around the 20th of the month. He knows when I'm exhausted, how I look when I have a killer headache, how to make me feel beautiful, and that a back rub goes a long way in relieving stress--he's good! He also senses when I'm in the mood to snuggle, when I want him to sit close, or when I'm craving intimacy. I swear that man is a mind reader!

As much as I'm crazy about this man and love being intimate with him, I will tell you this: there are many days when I'm tired, when I'm stressed out, or when I'm not feeling like a rockstar, that I choose to put all that aside for my husband's needs. Because I know that in order for our marriage to survive I must be willing to give sacrificially in every area of our life. That's what love does, and that's what he does for me.

As I examine myself I hope that I am meeting his expectations as well.--that I'm reading his signals and learning what makes him tick. That's all a part of growing together as a couple, and it's essential that we don't ignore or abandon this area of our marriage.

Let's bring it to prayer:

Father, my prayer today is that I am reading Michael's signals as well as I should be. That I'm speaking his language and fulfilling the desires of his heart. If I'm lacking then I pray that the You will open my eyes to see what his needs are and how I might grow in this area. Knowing that every man is different, I want to be the kind of wife that is a perfect fit for him, Lord. Please transform me to the woman Michael needs. Amen

I'm ready for a challenge, are you?

Revive Your Marriage - Revive Your Praise!

womenlivingwell.org   |   tolovehonorandvacuum.com   |   unveiledwife.com

Any mom who cares for a growing child knows the importance of praise in their children's life. Not only does it help to build a healthy sense of self esteem, it also reminds a child that he or she is loved. In the same way, any wife who cares for her husband will also know the importance of praise in a marriage. It's vital to a growing relationship.

What is praise exactly? It's a positive expression we offer another that shows our admiration and approval of who they are.

Do you realize that there are four verses in Proverbs alone that talk about nagging wives? They are referred to as quarrelsome, fretful, and a continual dripping. If you've ever experienced a leaky roof, you'll know how annoying that is. We experienced one about 20 years ago in our back porch, and regardless of how many times I emptied the pail it would only fill up again. That's the danger with nagging. It can become a never-ending habit if left unchecked, and unfortunately it festers resentment.

Praise on the other hand has the reverse affect. It builds the bond of marriage and draws a couple closer together. That's only two of the benefits, let's take a look at five more!

5 Reasons to Praise Your Husband:

1. When you affirm him you are affirming your adoration of him. Knowing that someone loves you deeply strengthens the bond of marriage. Think of it this way: we form the strongest friendships with those that we deeply trust.

2. When you praise him for the little things he does, it's more likely that he'll be encouraged to repeat them in the future.

3. When I praise my husband whether it be in his presence or in his absence, we bear witness of our marriage covenant. Keeping in mind that marriage reflects the covenant between Jesus Christ and the church it's important to honor our vows in the best way we know how.

4. Kindness is an attractive quality. There's no possible way a wife can be attractive when she's constantly nagging her husband. Sure, you can put the pretty on, but unless you're also attractive it wears thin. There's nothing appealing about a critical spirit.

5. He'll be glad to come home. Let's face it, the world is tough place. Many of our husbands are dealing with difficult situations at work and need a sense of relief when they walk through the door. Unfortunately some other husbands are working with women who are building them up outside of the home. If we want a husband who is glad to come home to his wife, we can make him feel welcome by letting him know that we appreciate him, that we respect him, and that we're glad he is with us.

Finally, let's remember what we talked about the other day in the "A Million Tiny Things Challenge": "The more we give strength to positive thoughts, our negative thoughts lose power.

I'm ready for a challenge, are you?

Revive Your Marriage - Revive Your Friendship!

Today we're talking about reviving our friendships in our marriages. Looking to the scriptures, I find the story of David and Johnathan which is an incredible testimony of friendship and loyalty. The Bible says that their souls were knit together as one. It doesn't get much better than that, does it?

But here's the thing... the beauty of their friendship wasn't based on the fact that these guys went to football games together or spent time shooting the breeze at Starbucks. They probably did have some guy time, but the bottom line is that their bond was strengthened by self-sacrifice, which is what made their story so incredible!

Just to give you a little background on this, in 1 Samuel (around chapters 18-23) we find the complete story. David was anointed to be the next king. King Saul takes him into his household, makes him a commander of his army and gives him a daughter in marriage. But while this is going on, jealousy and anger overtake Saul to the point where he is desperate to have David killed. He attempts this several times, but each time David escapes. With the help of Jonathan, the king's own son, David finally flees to the wilderness and goes into hiding. Their parting words are, "The LORD shall be between me and you, and between my descendants and your descendants, for ever."

While Jonathan was the son of a king, he lived in submission to David, because he not only knew it, he was obedient to the fact that David was an anointed servant of the Lord. He humbled himself by turning away from his own family to protect David's life. In doing this he was giving up any chance that he had at at being established as the next king. Their friendship was sealed with a covenant that was to be kept between them and their descendants forever.

What we see in all of this is that true friendship is not self-seeking. If we want to strengthen the bond, we must be willing to give up our desires for the good of another.

What can we draw from the story of David and Johnathan as it applies to our marriage?

1. We can submit to our husband's authority as outlined in scripture.
2. We can help to protect him by covering him in prayer.
3. We can hand over a proverbial sword by sharpening our husbands with the Word of God.
4. We should turn away from anything that threatens our marriage, while keeping in line with the will of God.
5. And finally, we must stay true to our covenant.

A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. ~ Proberbs 18:24

Week 2 - Revive Your Marriage - Revive Your Attitude!

My daughter and I had our photo taken together this year and I had to laugh at the photographer, because instead of saying, "Say 'cheese'," the photographer said, "Say 'facebook'!" Of course we cracked up as he snapped the photo.

It's a sign of this new generation isn't it? I'm as guilty as the next person when it comes to wanting a good picture for my profile page. Like thousands of other people, it's important for me to put my best face forward. That includes a warm smile. :D

So what does photography have to do with our topic today? Here's an interesting little fact: look up the word "attitude" in the dictionary and you'll find out that the origin of the word comes from "attitudine," a technical term in art for the posture of a figure in a statue or painting. (dictionary.com)

Posing is all about choosing the right position whether it be in dance, photography, art, etc. Attitude is about choosing a position of the mind.

There are two sides to any situation we face--a positive side and a negative side. The pose we strike determines which side we take. As difficult as it might be at times, we have the choice to choose our attitude at any time for the good.

There have been times when I sense that I'm a little grumpy, and even though I know that I can let go of it and smile, I choose to hang on to it. Praise God for His grace as He gently leads this work in progress.

The tagline of my ministry is "Empowering Wives to Joyfully Serve." And the reason I chose that focus is because I firmly believe that in many cases our attitude can set the tempo in our home.

Have you ever heard the saying, "When mama's happy, everyone's happy?" I know it to be true in our home because a good attitude is not only contagious it offers a sense of assurance to others. It sends out an empowering message of contentment which is one that I want my family to pick up on because I know that Godliness with contentment is great gain. (1 Timothy 6:6)

Here are a five ways to help you strike that pose in your marriage today:
  1. Train yourself to focus on the good and tune out the bad. Your husband will especially appreciate this as you notice the little things that he does.
  2. Make sure that you're getting enough sleep. A well rested wife is a happier wife.
  3. Start the day of by spending some time with the Lord. Reading scripture and praying about your day will get you off to a great start. He will direct your paths, and work in your heart.
  4. Consider the fact that your husband is human. Offer him grace and room to grow.
  5. Avoid inspecting the grass at all costs. If you start looking over the fence at other marriages you'll soon be comparing your own husband to theirs. But because each and every one of us is unique in our own way that exercise is pointless.
And finally I'd like to leave you with two Bible verses to meditate on this week:
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. ~ Proverbs 4:23, NIV

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. ~ Romans 12:2, NIV

Are you ready for a challenge? Me Too!

P.S. My husband and I literally did the "stroll down memory lane" last weekend. We took our kids to the old foot bridge where we had our first kiss and enjoyed a picnic at the park there. It was an incredible day. AND it was my husband's idea too!

Week 1 - Revive Your Prayers - Revive Your Marriage!

Revive Your Prayers!

Home is the tapestry I weave day in and day out.
Prayer is the loom upon which I place my thread.
~ Time-Warp Wife

I know that some of you have really got it together when it comes to prayer. You can pray over a Big Mac as eloquently as one would thank God for Filet Mignon. I'm not that way. In fact I'm one fry short of a Happy Meal when it comes to saying the right thing.

ADD hasn't helped. I've knelt through prayer meetings thinking about everything but the prayer: How funny my eyes must look when they're shut closed... wondering if I'm squeezing them shut too tightly... knowing that I should keep my eyes closed, but curiosity keeps telling me I should look if even just this once...

Yeah, I'm one of those sneak-a-peak, lift-a-lid prayers who squirm in their chair.

And then I remind myself that I'm supposed to be concentrating on the Lord. I shuffle my position and get official until my thoughts drift off once again...

When I look at King David I see a different picture of prayer. One that's far less about man than it is about God:
Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous laws. Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble. ~ Psalm 119:164, NIV
Words like that move me to say, "More of you, Lord... less of me."

What might that look like in the life of a wife who desires to bring life to her marriage?

Could this be a picture of me praying by the kitchen sink while I'm washing my dishes? It could be. And yes--the Lord assures me that my eyes might be open as I take in the view from the back yard. I see the trees that my husband and I planted together, and I praise God for his gift of a husband.

Could this be a picture of me praising the Lord as I snuggle in close to my husband at night? What about that quiet moment in the afternoon when I'm folding his laundry?
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NIV
What I'm forever learning is that prayer has everything to do with the Lord and nothing to do with my righteousness. For righteousness is imputed to us by faith. We merely need to seek Him with a pure heart.
But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Matthew 9:13, NIV
This week's challenge is to seek God in prayer for your marriage. When and where will be up to you. Use your wedding ring as a constant reminder to pray for your marriage and for your husband. You might also pray that God will equip you in your role as a wife.
