Day 2 - A Cup Half Full of Grace

Every morning I wake up to a canvas sky freshly painted by the Master's hands. There isn't a single day that's identical to the last. Each and every one is unique in itself.

It's the most incredible view on earth and the wonderful crazy thing about it is that every single person on the planet can enjoy the view if they'd only look up.

How many times do we hop in our car and run to the store without giving it a second thought? How many days have we complained about the weather, but completely missed out on the fact that the sky was a breath-taking sight?

Last year I took to twitter to follow a storm we were having in our city. People from all over town were commenting on the trees that were knocked down, the streets that were flooded, and the lights that were out. Everyone noticed the fallen trees that the storm left behind, but few people took in the view.

Just before the storm hit us, I called Michael outside to look at the sky. We had never seen anything like it before. Rather than the clouds moving in one direction, two sides of the storm were coming together. In the center of it all, the air spun like a top.

Months later--on yet another cloudy day, I got to thinking about how nature and mankind are so much alike. Most of us (unless you're a total creep--in which case I won't share chocolate with you) have good intentions that shine like the sun. And while we desire to love people the way that they should be loved, our humanity, like clouds, tend to get in the way.

When I say humanity, I'm talking about every weakness that contradicts love: impatience, jealousy, acting unkind, being boastful, arrogant, selfish, or rude; demanding your own way and getting angry when others don't love you the way that you think you should be loved.
These are the kind of imperfections that Paul talks about when he writes, "For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do." ~ Romans 7:18-19

When we look at our husbands, what do we see? Are we looking at a caring compassionate man who struggles against temptation? Or are we too focused on his flaws to see anything else?

Do we see a man who leaves his socks on the floor or a man who takes his kids to the park after a long day at work?

Do we see a man who watches too much TV, or a man who works hard for his family?

Whatever we focus on are the thoughts that will continue to grow in our minds. They can either be thoughts of adoration or bouts of frustration, but let me assure you whichever you choose to feed will certainly grow.

Today's Vow: To accept your flaws with understanding and grace as you also do mine.

The Challenge:
Keep negative thoughts in check by reminding yourself that we're all human saved only by the grace of God.

You are loved by an almighty God,

6 Ways to Build Up Our Husbands

Last night I noticed a little water on the kitchen floor by the sink, which is par for the course considering that most days Nathaniel spills far more than he drinks. But when I noticed a bulging box of Cascade under the sink this afternoon and another puddle of water beneath my feet I knew we had a leak somewhere that had to be fixed.

It wasn't too serious, but enough of a drip that I stood on towels to wash dishes and changed my socks once or twice.

The sound of Michael tinkering in the kitchen after dinner was music to my ears. I wondered if he might be too tired or too busy to get to it this evening, but since we both know that water can cause permanent damage if it's left to soak, he wanted to get it repaired right away.

Looking at the scriptures I'm reminded of yet another damaging drip--a contentious woman.

A continual dripping on a very rainy day
And a contentious woman are alike;
~ Proverbs 27:15

Contention appears in a number of ways including opposing, nagging, arguing, challenging, belittling, and competing. And why do we do it? Because somehow we think that by nagging him we're encouraging our husbands to be a better person.

It seems to makes sense at the time, but the truth is that many of our husbands--and many wives for that matter--have fragile egos that should be handled with care and respect.

In the same way that a leaky faucet can cause permanent damage, our words if left unchecked can damage our relationships and can cause resentment to grow. I can't imagine what the state of my kitchen would be if we let that faucet leak for 10 years, but in some marriages that's what's happening. Sometimes the damage appears insurmountable. Giving up--they walk away.

If this problem is going on in our marriage, we need to get in there and immediately start to make changes that work to build up our husbands rather than tearing them down. Certainly it takes the work of two people to form a strong marriage bond, but my advice to you is that we concentrate on our share of the work and leave them to do theirs.

Here are six ways we can start building up our husbands today:
  1. Listen to what he has to say so that you will recognize what's on his heart.

  2. Make an effort to be as cheerful as you were when you were engaged to be married.

  3. Ignore his faults and focus on his strong points by taking note of them.

  4. Compliment him for the way that he looks and the good things that he does like working hard for the family.

  5. See him for who he is, not who you want him to be.

  6. Be slow to anger. Relay your frustration with love, respect, and a cool head.

Titus Tuesday November 6th - And a New Book from Karen Ehman!

My friend Karen Ehman has just released her new book, Let.It.Go. How to Stop Running the Show & Start Walking in Faith. Since Karen's been a guest contributor here a few times, and I know how much you all love her I jumped at the chance to share her book with y'all. Besides that, my other friend Candace Cameron Bure wrote the foreword!

Pssst... Check out the acknowledgements at the back, and you'll find that "yours truly" has a little mention too. Awe--so sweet of her!

And guess what? This page is one of the blogs registered on her blog tour, which means... drum roll please... that if you leave a comment on this post your name will be entered into her final draw for a Kindle Fire! (I apologize for my original error in this post.)

Want to know more about the book? Here's the 411:

Women are wired to control. We make sure the house is clean, the meals prepared, the children are dressed, and everyone gets to where they’re going on time. But sometimes our strength of being conscientious can morph into the weakness of being a slight—or all out—control freak! This humorous, yet spiritually practical book will help you to:

• Take control of your schedule yet welcome interruptions from God
• Draw the line between mothering and micromanaging
• Influence your husband instead of manipulating him
• Learn to control your emotions when you can’t control the circumstances
• Stop pursuing the appearance of perfection and start pursuing the person of God

You can find out more about the book, more about her other books, and more about Karen here: KarenEhman.com

A Father Who Shepherds His Family

Images like this remind me of the many years my dad spent leading my five sisters and I in the ways of the Lord.

I can't count the number of times we gathered around the old kitchen table to listen to his stories. Eating warm-buttered popcorn and sipping cherry Kool-Aid from plastic cups, we hung on every word that Dad spoke. Some days we cried (oh how we loved the sad stories!) and other days we laughed until we could barely take our next breath. Every day was a new lesson learned--something we could tuck into our pockets and carry through life.
Life was different back then, but nonetheless we were every bit as busy as families today. Dad worked full time, came home for dinner and took care of repairs around the house. Meanwhile, mom was an immaculate housekeeper--not to mention the fact that they has six kids that pulled them in six different directions at times. Yet somehow love found it's way to the kitchen table time and again where we stopped long enough to notice the world around us, before it passed by.

Little did I know at the time, Mom and Dad were co-teachers, and I their student in the first school I'd ever attend, and that every day was a new entry in this journal of life.

Most men will proclaim each his own goodness, But who can find a faithful man? The righteous man walks in his integrity; His children are blessed after him. ~ Proverbs 20:6-7

7 Ways to Praise Your Husband for 7 Days {and a Titus 2sday Linkup!}

During our recent marriage challenge, Rachel Wojnarowski wrote a post about praising our husbands. I asked Rachel if I could share her post with you today...
Guest contributor, Rachel Wojnarowski
According to Gary Chapman’s book, The Five Love Languages, one of the primary love languages is affirmation.  Simply giving the gift of words to affirm your spouse is that huge!  Even if your husband leans more towards another primary means of communicating love, there is not a man on earth who doesn't love praise.  Oh, who am I kidding?  There is not a person on earth who can’t appreciate honest praise.
Many times, I believe we fail to praise our husbands because we simply forget how awesome they are.  We grow accustomed to their strengths and fail to show them just how much we admire those strengths.  One of the things I well remember about my husband was the first time we talked on the phone.  I remember thinking how much I loved the depth and tone of his voice. Still do! But as I stated a few weeks ago, familiarity in marriage doesn't always breed contempt- it simply breeds complacency, which can be even more dangerous.
Let’s get creative this week with ways to praise our husbands!  Today I’m presenting:
APPLAUD:  7 Ways to Praise Your Husband for 7 Days
Day 1: A – Appreciate those physical attributes that attracted you to your husband in the beginning.  Maybe it is still his biceps, or that dark hair, or those intriguing eyes…whatever it is, take notice and tell him!
Day 2: P – Praise his character traits that wouldn’t be visible unless he acted on them.  Some ideas of these types of characteristics are his merciful heart or grace-giving or gentle spirit.  Acknowledging the actions you adore that come from your husband’s character will be much appreciated!
Day 3: P – Promote his position as the leader of your home.  From the time my children have been born, we get excited when Daddy arrives home from work.  No matter what time of day, we drop everything we’re doing and greet him at the door with hugs and kisses.
Day 4: L – “Like” your husband. And I don’t mean “like” him on Facebook.  Although that’s a great idea also… ;)   I mean like his interests enough to be able to compliment him about them.  For instance, when my husband goes for a run, upon his return, I simply ask, “How far did you go?”  And he shares his distance and times.  Then I compliment his distance or time.  Simple, purposeful conversation.
Day 5: A – Acknowledge his accomplishments.  Whether ministry or career or personal, celebrate achievements! Add an extra date night, make a special dessert for after dinner, or write a note simply saying how proud you are that he did it- whatever “it” happens to be.
Day 6: U – Understand the need for affirmation.  Be sensitive to a discouraging day at work or a personal disappointment and find a way to encourage his heart, even when you can’t praise an accomplishment.
Day 7: D – Determine to be positive in your conversations.  Often the “sludge” of the day can get piled up and dumped on your husband as soon as you see him at day’s end. Ease into conversation- I’m not saying you have to hide the sludge- because we both know he will smell it sooner or later. ;)   But determining in advance to be optimistic about the Lord’s direction in an area will assist you in praising your husband even through difficult circumstances.
I hope you’ll let us know how you plan to APPLAUD your husband this week! Leave us a comment below!
Blessings,
Rachel
