About a month ago I got caught speeding. The thing is that I'm not usually like this. I don't purposely break the law, but I was incredibly stressed about something that day, and just as I started to pray about it I noticed that I was over the speed limit.
Okay, I'll tell you what it was... I have an over-active bladder, I had just come out of a 45-minute traffic jam, and all I could think of was getting to a bathroom fast! It was a serious issue--at the time.
Lifting my foot off the gas I slowed down, just in time to see a traffic cop at the side of the road. They pulled me over, and wrote me a ticket for $425.00. To top it all off, it was my husband's birthday. So now I was stressed out, AND I had a $425.00 ticket on my dashboard to explain to Michael. Ugh!
I was told by friends that I could go down to the law court building with the ticket and explain my situation. In many cases, I'm told, they will lesson the fine. So a few days ago my husband and I went downtown with pink slip in hand to see what--if anything--we could do.
I sat ten feet away from the wickets listening to person after person pleading "guilty with a reason," while I watched each one walk away disappointed.
Finally it was my turn. With pink slip in hand I walked up to the justice of the peace to plead my case.
"Are you guilty or not guilty?" She asked.
"Guilty." I put my purse on the counter, "but I do have a reason that I hope the court will consider..."
I was about to explain the many woes of my over-active bladder. I was ready to go into any and all details necessary to plead my case, but before I had a chance to say anything else, she handed the pink slip back to me with the words "SQUASHED" written across it. Apparently the officer had forgotten to check off the box labelled "Speeding" thus rendering the ticket "VOID." I was free to leave without paying a cent.
As I walked out of there, I got to thinking about God's wondrous ways. There's rarely a day that I understand "why" or "how" He does the things He does, but there are those times, like this, when I see that even during those moments of stress He is in control.
He interceded with a detour that changed the course of my day, and although it seemed grievous to me at the time like so many other things that make us anxious in life, this too passed away.
I also got to thinking about the fine I owed, but didn't pay. "Guilty," and yet I walked out of there without paying a cent. I'm reminded of the day when we will all appear before the judgement seat of Christ waiting to plead our case. When all who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ as their hope for salvation will receive a full pardon of sin.
Until then, I pray that my life will be one that is pleasing to Him. Ready at any moment to accept a detour here and there--ready to follow His will every day of my life.
Wherefore we labour, that, whether present
or absent, we may be accepted of him.
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ;
that every one may receive the things done in his body,
according to that he hath done,
whether it be good or bad.
