Documenting your vote: send us your videos

Tomorrow, voters across the United States will head to the polls to cast their ballot in the 2012 election. Regardless of whether you’re a veteran or first-time voter, taking part in the electoral process is a powerful experience, and one that we know many of you will document in some way, just like you did in 2008.

We want to see and hear from you tomorrow. Whether you’re vlogging about which candidate you support, capturing footage of the long line at your polling place, or encouraging your friends to get out of the house and go vote, we’re inviting you to send us your Election Day videos. You can either tweet them to @YouTubePolitics or include #YouTubePolitics in the video title, and a selection will be featured on the YouTube Elections Hub.

Be sure to check your state law for guidelines about what polling place activities are allowed where you live, and consult the Citizen Media Law Project’s Documenting Your Vote project before bringing your camera to your voting location.

marbleize it!

Now that November has arrived the countdown to the holidays has begun and I have all kinds of ideas, projects and inspiration to share throughout the next two months! First up a quick and simple way to marbleize with spray paint.


1. Start with a bucket or vessel large enough to fit your paper (I used large sheets of watercolor paper). Fill with about 2-3 inches of water. 2. Using spray paint, mist the surface of the water (FYI- this should be done outside with lots of ventilation or while wearing a mask). 3. Add more color to the surface of the water. 4. Let the colors blend together, shake the bucket to break color up or even use a stir stick to create swirls and designs. 5. Place paper onto the surface of the water and quickly remove (I find that using a more absorbent paper like watercolor or card stock works best). Spray paint, even on the surface of water dries quickly so you have to work fast! 6. The result is a colorful, fast drying piece of marbleized paper to use in all kinds of DIY projects.

The coolest thing about this technique is that it can also be used on glass ornaments and the spray paint will dry permanent and not flake off! Simply dip the ornament into the surface of the colorful water!

Love Keeps No Record of Wrongs

"He got to sit in the front last time," Nathaniel said, shoving Graham out of the way.

As the two of them were busy pushing and pulling for their right to ride shotgun, Madison slipped through to claim her spot in the front seat.

"Mom!!" they complained through closed windows. "She always sits there!"

And so it went day after day until I started them on a rotation.

Now the argument is about the order of the rotation. Nathaniel always insists that we have it wrong, Madison says that she's right, and frankly I'm never concerned enough to keep an accurate count.

Whether we're talking about car seats, cookies, or who took the last cracker, they're consumed with keeping track lest they find themselves with one crumb less than their siblings.

One day I sat them down for a talk. It was time to learn a lessen in humility.

"The Bible tells us that the first shall be last," I said. "So if you always insist on being the first here on earth, you won't be the first up in heaven."

Well, guess what happened the next day? We couldn't get the kids out of the van. They took this principle a little too far when each of them insisted on being the last kid out.

Sounds petty doesn't it? But you know what? There's rarely a day when I don't see adults acting much the same way.

Take this for example... if I write an article on wives joyfully serving our families you can bet that someone will leave a reminder in the comments that this must go both ways. On the flip side, if I mention the important role of a husband, I'll get the same thing.

I can't help but feel that we're placing love on a scale. We're more concerned that it might tip one way or the other than we are about loving in the best way we know how.

Jesus tipped the scales big time. While we were yet sinners--lying, stealing, cheating, self-centered sinners--He gave up His life. He took the weight of our sin upon Himself and died in the most horrific way that we might have life.

Love gives up it's right to be right and steps down so that others can shine. It is not self-seeking.

So what does this look like in the heat of an argument? I'm not saying that you shouldn't communicate your frustrations with your husband. By all means do! What I am saying is that real love gives and keeps giving without expecting a return on the investment.

It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. ~ 1 Corinthians 15:5, NIV

When you really think about what those words mean--keeps no record of wrongs--we see that this attitude closes the door on resentment.

If I were to pin point the one thing that led me to almost destroying my marriage it would be that I was keeping a record of wrongs. And the very thing that transformed my marriage to the place it is now it would be that Michael didn't keep a record of wrongs. While I was at my very worst he gave me his best.

For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.~ Romans 5:7-8

Last night I received a letter from a reader. Here are a few of the frustrations that she expressed to me:  

Where I get overwhelmed is when I read the books that I have read I feel like only a stay-at-home mom could achieve this. I tried to do what the Bible and books say to do, or what I think it says. One day, and I was over it. I tried to do it all. The result was I was over tired and resentful. 

Please don't get me wrong. I do want to take care of my husband my house and my child. But to be happy about it all the time, um, no.

After reading that, I got to thinking that this might be a good time to address what The Good Wife's Guide is really about. 

Is it a book with a focus on stay-at-home moms? Although many SAHMs will definitely enjoy the book, I can tell you that chapter one clearly points out that it's not. It's a book that encourages you to love your family and make them a priority.

Does it encourage you to be happy all of the time? Absolutely. However, encouragement and reality are two different things which is where grace comes in. I don't know any mom that wants to get up at 2 am to wash sheets, scrub a toilet or clean the fourth dirty diaper of the night. And (although there are some of you out there) I don't know any man or woman that looks forward to making dinner and washing the supper dishes after a long day at work--but that's what love does. Love always protects, always trust, always hopes, always perseveres. ~ 1 Corinthians 13:7. As tiring as it can be, it is not self seeking. 

With that said, I have to interject that I am not the perfect house wife, the greatest mother or any kind of Martha when it comes to housekeeping. And I can be quite self-seeking at times too. I'm a work in progress just like you who's walking under the umbrella of His incomparable grace.

Our goal should be that of creating a home that brings glory to God. And with every imperfection we have His grace abounds all the more.

None of us can do it "all," and besides that doing it all isn't what we are called to do. What we can do is learn to manage our time well and set our priorities straight so that we will be equipped to handle what we've been given to do and leave the rest in His hands.

fashion friday- recycled felt medallion necklace

I have spent months staring at a pile of baby food jar lids hoping that I would come up with something unique and creative to make with them. FINALLY one day it hit me- they are the perfect size for a medallion for a necklace and I could fill the inside with something colorful and creative. There are probably all kinds of unique ways to fill the inside of a lid (beads, resin, metal, found objects, etc) but I decided on doing something a little unexpected- using felt.

1. I started with colorful felt and cut out a circle the size of my lid. 2. I cut small colorful shapes that would be arranged on top of the black felt. 3. Using my sewing machine, a free motion foot and white thread, I sewed all of my shapes down to the to black circle (I love messy stitching so I went a little wild) 4. Next I prepared my lid by drilling a hole at the top so I could add a jump ring. 5. Then I used Tacky Glue and glued down a piece of stuffing. 6. I glued my felt medallion onto the stuffing and tucked the edges under the lip of the lid.

Last, I added a jump ring and put it on a chain. I loved it so much I created a few and even turned one into a big statement ring!
