The YouTube Fan Lounge at San Diego Comic-Con

Each year, more than 130,000 avid fans attend Comic-Con International in San Diego to meet their favorite celebs and be the first to find out about what’s new in the world of comics and pop culture. For the first time, YouTube will be present, hosting a Fan Lounge in downtown San Diego to connect fans with some of the newest channels on YouTube, featuring many Comic-Con veterans.

On Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14 from 11am to 9pm, the YouTube Fan Lounge – located at 315 7th Avenue at K in downtown San Diego – will be open and free to the public, with live programming, exclusive premieres, celebrity Q&A’s and, of course, free schwag! Check out some of the channels and talent you’ll see:

• Blackbox TV featuring Tony E. Valenzuela (creator of Blackbox TV), actor Brea Grant & Zane Grant, and more. 
• Geek & Sundry featuring Felicia Day, Veronica Belmont and Tom Merritt. 
• Nerdist featuring Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Tournament of Nerds with Justin Donaldson and Hal Rudnick.

Music Tuesday: Serj Tankian, Aesop Rock and more

After a long holiday week punctuated by two playlists of summertime music from the Zac Brown Band and rising country star JT Hodges, we’re getting back to work -- and our job is finding ways to distract you with fantastic music offerings. Go forth and be distracted!

Serj Tankian’s Eclectic Brain
You might think the lead singer of System of a Down would be all about the METAL. And of course he is. But Serj Tankian has carved out a persona beyond that of lead singer: his ambitious 2010 album Imperfect Harmonies saw him playing with multiple genres and time signatures and breaking out of any hard rock ghetto he might have been in. Today he releases his new album Harakiri, and we discover that if you give the man a chance to share his favorite music videos, you’ll quickly lose all preconceptions about him. Would you have thought he dug jazz fusion, Tom Waits and Cape Verdean morna? Neither did we.



Aesop Rock: “Skelethon” Full Album Stream
It’s been five years since Aesop Rock’s last album. The emcee known for his off-kilter flow and surreal lyrics has seen a lot of life changes in the intervening years, so it’s not surprising his new album Skelethon is a dark affair. It’s also one of his best. Entirely self-produced and suffused with angular, muddy beats, Skelethon drips with head-spinning lyricism that as enjoyable to listen to as it is to decipher. It’s perfectly complemented by a high-speed video shot at a go-kart track. That’s right: we have Aesop Rock’s new album in it entirety today, with a video. Peep it.



Donatan Rownonoc: Nie Lubimy Robic
Yes, it’s a mouthful. But before you get totally intimidated by the name, keep reading! This video was one of the most-liked music videos in the world yesterday, so naturally we had to watch it. We can tell you this: the band hails from Poland, they seem to think accordions and hip-hop belong together (bless them), and they made a hilarious and weirdly beautiful video which partly involves them spoofing what passes for video games in rural Poland. (Hint: chickens are involved.) You may not speak the language, but you’ll get the message: this is fun stuff.

While the palm trees of Southern California (in my old life) were beautiful- I do have a soft spot in my heart for the wild ferns in Oregon- boy have I missed them! The Pacific Northwest is home to about 40 different species of ferns and it seems everywhere you turn you are able to find these gorgeous green beauties! I couldn't resist creating my own fabric using a variety of ferns from our yard and a few simple surface design techniques from my book Sew Wild.

The first technique is a glue resist- all you need is Elmers Glue, a paint brush and ferns (any leaves or anything with texture will also work).

I covered the ferns with glue and then pressed them into the surface of fabric- it left an imprint (almost like a stamp) in glue. I covered the surface and then let the glue dry completely.

Next, I painted over the top of the fabric with dye.

Once the surface was dry, I heat set my dye with an iron and then washed the fabric.

The glue washes away and in its place you have a beautiful imprint of the ferns.

Next, I used the ferns as a stencil and as a stamp by placing them on the surface of my fabric and then painting over the top.

I also covered the ferns with dye and then pressed them into the surface to leave an imprint

I covered my fabric with layers of fern stencils and imprints.

Of course I couldn't resist putting my fabric to use!

I cut it up and used all of the pieces to create "scrappy" place mats,

I sewed all of the scraps together with lots of free motion stitching.

And just like that I created a set of place mats for our dining room table!

When I shared Psalm 127:1 on the Time-Warp Wife facebook page, a question arose, What does it really mean? 

It's a good reminder for those of us who are raising a family, building a strong marriage, or simply setting up house. The words deliver a message to us wherever we are in life, but the root of that message remains the same: whatever we set out to build must be laid upon a firm foundation. If there's anything I've learned about being a wife and a mother that would definitely be it...

I remember the night like it was yesterday. I'll never forget that feeling of helplessness that hung in the room while the nurse stood by my side--waiting for someone to give us an answer. 

What was happening to my son? It wasn't said--it didn't have to be. We knew that he was struggling to stay alive while a team of doctors worked to find a solution. 

Only six-weeks-old and he was facing a complication from the surgery he had earlier that day. We were told that his operation was an incredibly difficult one. That because of the extent of the procedure we had to wait until the six week mark. Until that time his health was dangling by a thread with a ureter that could erupt at any given time. He had a serious issue with his kidney's that required immediate attention, but because of the severity we waited until he was strong enough to go under anesthetics for that long. Every night during those weeks of waiting our baby slept with a New Testament open on his tummy. It was a symbol to us and to our child that we were placing him into the hands of our Lord. 

It was finally over, or so we thought. Hustling around the room the nurse kept herself busy asking me questions to take my mind off of the problem at hand. Do you have any other children? How long have you been married? Have you always lived in this city?... Her sudden interest in me at three in the morning told me that she was seeing the same thing that I was. What had started out as a puffy spot beneath his eye increased. We were now looking at an infant whose entire face was swollen to possibly twice it's size. 

It was a horrific sight and one of the toughest experiences I've ever faced as a mother. But in that moment of darkness when all there was to hang on to was hope, I had a sure and steady rock I could lean on that carried me through. 

That's what Psalm 127 says to me. Build your house upon the rock, for when the rain comes, and it will, you will have firm place where you can stand and say, "It it well."

The Lord knows those times that I pace or call a friend with my problems before getting down on my knees. Those many times when I'm failing to rest--when I'm failing to lean. Those times when I take my eyes off the Savior to look down at the water beneath me while that sinking feeling sets in. His grace carries me through as I learn to lean a little more every day. And while I do, I'm learning the importance of building that place where I can run to for shelter.


We have stop and ask ourselves why sometime: 


Why are we raising these children? So they'll grow up to be good citizens, or faithful warriors in the kingdom of God? 


Why do we enter into marriage? So that we have life-long companion or so that we might reflect the covenant of our Lord Jesus Christ and His faithful Bride? 


Why do we keep a good house? So that our family will be proud of us, or so that we may serve others as unto the Lord? 

And so you might ask, can't we have both? The answer is absolutely, and I pray that you will!

lucy's first hike

I have been daydreaming about this day since I found out I was pregnant- packing up Lucy and taking her on a hike. And while I am in love with the ocean, I might be just as in love with the forests that tower over the ocean here on the Oregon Coast. There is something magical and amazing about the fern lined trails that twist and turn through miles of enormous trees that seem to touch the sky and I couldn't wait to share it all with Lucy! It was a short hike and despite muddy trails, Lucy's first trek into the forest lived up to all my daydreams.

It's Sunday morning and I feel like Martha with Sunday dinner preparations, kids bickering over blankets and which shoes to wear...and how did all those wrinkles wind up on Little Bit's dress? The angst of it all swells and the cares of this household choke me near to death.

Yes, I'm Martha, and in the Lord's very presence? How can that be? I wonder if I'll ever get it right.

Somehow we arrive to church early. The wind in the trees beckon us outside and we walk the property line with the kids. I walk under the shade trees, the wind carressing the skin. The words caress too, brushing against my angst filled soul, "Now Jesus loved Martha."

We all know Martha to be the worried, distracted, serving one. But it says it right there in the scriptures that Martha was a beloved child of the Christ. My troubled heart leaps. Jesus loves us Marthas.

Chronology of the gospels place Jesus' encounter with Martha in John 11 {the raising of Lazarus from the dead} after His reprimand of her in Luke 10:38. In other words, Jesus did not reprimand Martha, shake His head sadly at her, and then move out of her life. Quite the contrary. He identified her need and arranged an encounter to resolve it.

While we tend to leave Martha stewing in the kitchen, the Good Shepherd was so tenderized towards Martha after seeing her distraught and in bondage that He specifically arranged an encounter with her. An encounter that would liberate her from her worry-laden, stress- filled service. Isn't that just like our Savior?

In front of the church, I pace under the trees while the children collect pine cones, my mind racing, recalling details of the John 11 account... How Jesus loved Martha so he delayed going to save Lazarus... How Martha came to meet Him on the road to question Him... How Jesus wept when He saw her grief... How He gave her a powerful "I AM" statement and asked "do you believe this?"...

This encounter that has Martha's name all over the place might just be her turning point. Before our very eyes we may have the encounter intended to move Marthas the world over from angst-filled hearts into hearts that behold the glory of God.

And there in John 11:40, just before Lazarus is raised, He turns one more time to Martha and says, "Didn't I tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?"


"If you believe..."

What is Jesus saying? Could it be that Martha's troubled soul could find its rest through trust? For all her dedication and service, was deep, abiding trust the missing factor in how Martha related with her Lord?

The kids are throwing pine cones across the fence. Someone's hair gets snagged in a branch and she jerks away, leaving a few strands dangling, blowing in the breeze. Oldest says it straight out: "Well God still knows how many strands you have left." This same God who counts hair is the same One who says, "Do not worry...just believe."

So why all the fretfulness? Isn't fretfulness a failure to simply trust?

Stressed like Martha, sinking like Peter... we are overwhelmed by the waves of life because we look away from the One who walks on water, feeds sparrows, and numbers the hairs of our heads. And every time I cave to the swelling tide of noise, hurry, to-do lists, and chaos, it's because I choose not to believe. I choose to believe the noise of turbulence instead of choosing abiding trust in the Savior.

All the while, our Shepherd arranges faith-producing encounters for His followers. He sees the affliction of our souls and walks on water right there in the midst of the turmoil. He delays the quick fix so that we might truly trust. "Do not doubt, only believe," He gently coaches.

To all the Marthas today, Jesus is there asking, "Do you believe this? Do you believe I AM {all you need}?"

And if not, will you? Will you trust the One who is All-sufficient?

Seven "I AM" statements from the book of John

{Some Jesus statements to tuck into the heart and start believing~ in the chaos or in the kitchen}:

"I AM the Bread of Life." Jesus, I will trust You to meet every hunger pang and satisfy every craving of my heart. I will turn to You and I will not be in want.

"I AM the Light of the World." Jesus, I trust You to illuminate the darkness and I choose to walk by faith, not by sight. I need not rely on my own understanding.

"I AM the Door." Jesus, I trust You to be my security, my safety, and to provide my "good pasture." I will not seek my own grazing grounds but will trust You to lead me beside still waters.

"I AM the Good Shepherd." Jesus, I need not be my own guide or shepherd. Rather, I will listen to and follow Your voice.

"I AM the Resurrection and Life." Jesus, I trust You to raise the dead, smelly places within me to new life. I will not rely upon my own self-righteousness or good deeds.

"I AM the Way, Truth, and Life." Jesus, I trust You to be the Way when there is none, to speak Truth in a world of noise and turmoil, and to be my very Life.

"I AM the Vine." Jesus, I trust You to nourish my soul, to provide the succor and sustainence necessary to produce fruit.

P.S. The third and final time we see Martha in chronology is in John 12. A risen Lazarus is reclining at the table with Jesus, Mary is wiping His feet with her hair, and Martha is serving Him... this trio of worship, three souls redeemed and brought full circle to life abundant. Jesus didn't leave any of them where they were!


Are you a Martha? There is hope! Jesus isn't content with us stewing in the kitchen, my friend. Grab onto His Person and believe! For she who believes will see the glory of God.
