Day 30 - Lifting Grace

Now the young lady pleased him
and found favor with him.
Esther 2:9
Esther exhibited a grace-filled charm and elegance. In this verse, the literal translation of the original language says, "She lifted up grace before his face." Isn't that a beautiful expression? Though she was brought to the harem and participated in these things reluctantly, Esther did not display a sour attitude. I'm convinced she sensed God's hand in her situation. Why else would she have been there? ~ Swindoll

I would have to say that one of the most important lessons that God is teaching me in and through my marriage is how to give grace. Isn't it a funny thing how we seem to be able to easily offer grace to the stranger on the street, to the hurting on the mission field, to the friend that's lost as a goose, but we will find ourselves unwilling to give grace to our own spouse.

We place this expectation of perfection on them and this unspoken demand that they should be able to read our minds and know exactly what we need and want, when we need and want it, the way we need and want it. We expect them never to be angry or frustrated or make a mistake and they simply must just understand us perfectly.

My husband and I have finally learned in our 13 years of marriage that we filter things differently. We see things differently. We understand things differently. We interpret things differently. It took us a while to realize that we have a breakdown in communication between the female and male way of thinking and doing.

One of the most powerful illustrations of the realization I have for this breakdown happened not long ago. You must first understand that I am not "Betty Crocker" at all. I can cook, but I do not love to cook. If I am given the slightest out on cooking I am taking it.

"Oh, your mother wants us to come out for dinner tonight, well great!" (I truly love my mother-in-laws cooking!)

"You’re still full from a late lunch? Okay, the girls and I will have a bowl of cereal."

"You want to go eat where? That's sounds like a plan to me."

Like I said, I can cook and usually my food is pretty tasty, but I am a klutz in the kitchen. I literally have kitchen wars battle scars all over my arms and hands from the past 13 years of cooking for my husband.

I always manage to make a mess. I will burn something, boil something over, or knock something down. Freakish things will happen to me in the kitchen when I am tying to do the simplest thing.

Once I was in the middle of making out-of-the-box mac & cheese and I go to shake down the pack of powdered cheese and in mid shake the package opens itself. Me and my kitchen are now covered in powdered cheese. I believe I found scattered powdered cheese for weeks.

Now on the opposite end, my husband loves to cook and he is a wonderful cook. I mean he is in the "he could do this for a living if he wanted to" category of good cook. While I was in my "kitchen klutz" mode with battle scars and powdered cheese I felt that I could never meet his standards in the kitchen. I felt that he was comparing me to all those women on the Food Network who are talking about feeding their men. Oh you know, the Barefoot Contessa and her Jeffrey and Paula Dean and her Michael. I knew I could never measure up to them.

So this is where my cooking frustration was/is rooted.

Now back to the realization illustration... On one particular day I am cooking dinner and the usual freakish things and injuries are taking place as I attempt to prepare this meal. My husband is in the kitchen and I mouth off my frustration and say "This is why I hate cooking!"

As I mouthed how I hated cooking, what my husband heard was "I hate taking care of you!"

Ouch!

Of course, me, knowing what I knew about myself, when he let me know this was what he heard, I grew indignant at his response. I thought, how in the world can you even think such a thing! That's ridiculous!

Major miscommunication.

Because in truth what I wanted was for my husband to see how much I sacrifice in order to take care of him. I wanted him to acknowledge that he saw how I was willing to suffer the battle scars and the messes made by my kitchen klutzdom. But the words coming out of my mouth counter-acted my actions.

I displayed a sour attitude and I did not lift up grace to my husband. I was playing the martyr. I think that possibly I was even trying to manipulate him through guilt into saying something encouraging to me as I struggled there before the stove.

I was sending signals and expecting to hear words of his great appreciation as he acknowledged my willing sacrifice to do this cooking thing that I hated so much just because I loved him. I certainly was not expecting that he would interpret my words as hating to take care of him and our family.

Major backfire.

So here is where grace comes in. My husband knows me very well, but he cannot read my mind. I know my husband very well, but I cannot read his mind.

Neither of us is perfect.
Neither of us can assume about the other.
Both of us are growing and changing as we grow in the knowledge of the Lord and in His wisdom.
Both of us have flesh that grows weary and frustrated and sick.
Both of us have needs and wants and particular ways we prefer to have things done.
We understand each other perty well, but not yet perfectly, but we are pressing on for maturity.

As we press on we must lift up grace.
If we are to receive grace we must first be willing to give grace. The only way we are able to receive the grace of God is because God was first willing to give it to us.

Grace is a gift.

Ladies, if we have received grace from God we can give it to our husbands. Let us lavish grace and mercy on them the way that God has lavished His on us.
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses,
according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us.
In all wisdom and insight He made known to us the mystery of His will,
according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him.
Ephesians 1:7-9
Notice that in the grace that was lavished on us God made known the mystery of His will. He does not expect us to read His mind or figure Him out by sending "signals." In His offered grace He flat out makes known what He wants from us, what He needs from us, and the way He prefers it to be done and also notice it was according to His kind intention, not finger-shaking, head-bobbing, foot-stomping, harsh demand.

Today's Challenge:

Lift up grace before his face. Think of at least one thing that you have been "giving signals" over and then have pouted over because he didn't get the signal. Offer him grace. Don't assume he is ignoring the "signal." Go to him and make known the mystery of your will and do it with kindness, not in an accusatory or belittling tone.

Then look for God's hand in a situation that you are not particularly happy to be in. Think of at least one thing that you do for your husband with "a sour attitude" and turn that sour attitude into sweet submission trusting that God's hand is at work in him and in you and in your marriage.

What a Day That Will Be

As my dad is walking through the last hours of his life I'm reminded of a day in October 2010. He called to tell me that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer and that it had metastasized to his brain. Immediately after giving me the news he started to sing over the phone.

There is coming a day when no heartaches shall come.
No more clouds in the sky, no more tears to dim the eye.
All is peace forevermore on that happy golden shore,
What a day, glorious day that will be...

Tears streamed down my face as I hung onto every word.

This past weekend I took a quick trip to Hershey, Pennsylvania, and while I was there I found out that once again his health was failing fast. I called my mom and asked her if she could put the telephone to Dad's ear. Knowing that he has lost his ability to speak this past year, I opened my mouth and began to sing...

There'll be no sorrow there, no more burdens to bear,
No more sickness, no pain, no more parting over there;
And forever I will be with the One who died for me,
What a day, glorious day that will be...

Last night I rushed home from Pennsylvania, tears pouring down my face for hours on end until I finally reached his bedside and took in the smile that spread accross his weary face. His frail hand reached out for mine, and in that holy place where kindred spirits blend we held on tightly for as long as we could. Then I knew that he needed to rest.

Yes--he could go home any hour now, but through the tears there's one thing I know for sure... God's grace is more than sufficient for me.

You are loved by an almighty God,

Darlene

We Wound, We Bully, and We Hurt - {and a Titus 2sday Link Up}

For in the day of trouble he will keep me
safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in
the shelter of his sacred tent and set
me high upon a rock.
~ Psalm 27:5, NIV

This past spring, a friend of mine told me a heart-wrenching story about school-yard abuse. Her nine-year-old cousin was bullied by a group of children who took his clothes away, leaving him naked on a cold winter day.

Humiliated, the young boy ran away hoping to find someplace to hide. Finally finding comfort in the shield of a snowbank, he hid himself the best way he knew how. Naked, ashamed and alone, he froze to death.

Ever since I heard that story I've been reminded of the separation that we see every day among the body of Christ. It grieves me. People who have been hurt by the church are hiding in the best way they know how.

We are sinful, broken beings made perfect only by His infallible grace. But we hurt. We wound, and we bully, and we hurt those people God loves. Among the body of Christ, as with any group of people you will find those who are still growing in grace. Faulty, imperfect, human beings who await their final day of perfection.

Intentional pain? No. But still somehow it happens as every week we see people leaving their congregation because they are covering wounds that won't heal.

Naked, ashamed and alone we run for cover in the best way we know how. Some of us come back to the body of Christ, while others unfortunately never return.

If you are in that place of separation and pain, I urge you to return to home base. Cling to a body of believers that will lead you toward a deeper walk with the Lord. A body of believers that will encourage you along and uplift you in prayer. You, me--all of us need to look past the imperfections in each other to focus on the perfection of an infallible God.

Bringing life to the lost and shelter to those who seek refuge, He will not disappoint; He will not let you down; and He will not cause you pain.

Run to Him, find shelter in His wing of protection, and cling to His glorious name--that's the safest place that any of us can go.

The name of the LORD is a strong tower:
the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
~ Proverbs 18:10

Why Me, Lord?

And a Titus 2sday Linkup!

Up until last summer I didn’t know I had a spiritual gift--that God was going to be using me in this particular way of empowering wives to joyfully serve.

Before all of this I looked at the extent of my gifts as perhaps making a great pasta salad for the church potluck. Then God started to nudge me in a different direction--one through which I would encourage women to to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children. To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

My first question--and I've talked about this before--was, Why me? I don’t have the best track record when it comes to perfection, so naturally I have to wonder, Am I good enough?

And if goodness has nothing to do with it, which by the grace of God it doesn't, then I'm still left with the question, “Why me?” Scratching down words for an upcoming speech, I hear His voice saying, "Write this.."

Clearly He speaks again, "Write this down: It doesn’t matter where you have been or what you have done, my grace is sufficient for you."

I get a little choked up when that sentence hits the keyboard. Could it really be God instructing me to write? Could it be His voice I’m hearing that says with authority, “Write this down?”

Immediately I turn to my devotional hoping for more. Meanwhile, I’m getting all excited and blurry eyed, and I whisper a prayer, “God if there is something in here that says, “My grace is sufficient for you,” I’m going to probably pass out on the spot. I don’t know what I’d do with that kind of confirmation.”

But that’s not what it said. The message was deeper and more explicit than I would have expected. Here’s what it said:

Divine Efficiency

"My servant Peter was not changed in a flash from a simple fisherman to a great leader and teacher, but through the very time of faithlessness--through the very time of denial--I was yet making him all that he should be. Impetuous spokesman as he always was, ready to lead the other disciples, Peter could never have been the after power he was, had he not learned his weakness. No man can save, unless he understands the sinner.

The Peter who was a mighty force for Me afterwards, who, more than all others, founded My church, was not even first the Peter who said, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God," but the Peter who denied Me. He who had tested My forgiveness in his moment of abject remorse, he could best speak of Me as the Savior.

The Kingdom of Heaven can only be preached by those who have learned to prize the authority of its Kingdom. A many-sided training My Apostles need. Oh! joy. Oh, rejoice. I love you. (God Calling, April 4th, 2011)

That the trial of your faith,
being much more precious than
of gold that perisheth, though
it be tried with fire, might be
found unto praise and honour
and glory.
~ 1 Peter 1:7

God is good, Amen?

A New Dance - Serena Woods

And a Titus 2sday Linkup!!

Steer clear of the barking dogs,
those religious busybodies,
all bark and no bite.
All they're interested in is
appearances—knife-happy circumcisers,
I call them.
~ Philippians 3:2

Something that I've learned over the past several years is that you cannot have enough self-control to perfect your Christianity. The realization is heart breaking, at first.

Every once in a while, I get asked to prove my worth. To list the steps I've taken and provide evidence of God's grace and restoration. There is a pressure to refine my appearance so that others can say, 'She's doing this or that.' 'God has obviously blessed her here. Look at these credentials...'

One thing that I am most thankful for is the realization that destroyed my sense of self-accomplishment. I learned that I cannot do this on my own and, in trying I was trying to gain independence from a God I was not made to be emancipated from. He gifts me with what I was reaching for all along and He did it when I realized I couldn't. You don't realize you can't until you are at your worst and are incapable of making it right.

Until I came to that point, I had no idea that I had deep roots of selfishness and conceit. I had been able to keep that part of me under control and dress in the cheap fabric of self-righteousness. When those roots surfaced in my life, I had no choice but to accept the damaged appearance and spend time watching Jesus clean out the depths of my heart.

My life, whether seen or not, is the healing dance of a crippled child. He holds my twisted legs straight and lets me dance on His toes. His feet moving me about. His spin catching my hair. He sings to me and I sing along. I worship Him from my depths. The depths I hid with my self-control. I give Him my worst and He shows me how to worship Him there.

The real believers are the ones
the Spirit of God leads to work
away at this ministry, filling
the air with Christ's praise
as we do it.
~ Philippians 3:3

Every once in a while, I get praised for my heart. They see me dancing and hear my song and they remark at the beauty. I'm telling you, it's not me you are seeing. It's my Father. I'm dancing on His toes, remember. I'm singing a song He taught me. It's not me. The sin you saw was me, the dance you see is Him.

Compared to the high privilege of
knowing Christ Jesus as my Master,
firsthand, everything I once thought
I had going for me is insignificant—dog dung.
I've dumped it all in the trash so that
I could embrace Christ and be embraced
by him. I didn't want some petty,
inferior brand of righteousness that
comes from keeping a list of rules when
I could get the robust kind that comes
from trusting Christ—God's righteousness.
~ Philippians 3:8-9

There will always be those who want something more than the dance of praise. They won't accept you unless you've earned a diploma from their school. But, I'm saying, forget about the way you look to others. Feel His feet under yours, His grip on your hands. Lean back, shut your eyes and let Him spin you around in a song of praise. Think about what that must look like to Him...

By God's Grace I Write

Note: For those of you who aren't aware. I am the founder and former editor of Christian Women Online Magazine. Joy Forney mentions it in her letter below. After writing my response, I thought it might be nice to copy you in on our correspondence, so that I might introduce you to Joy, and also that you, my readers and friends, will understand the passion I have. I am a messenger of the King, nothing more. It's by His grace alone that I write.

Dear Darlene,

You are one of those pioneers in the blogging community... just a few years ago everyone had CWO [Christian Women Online Magazine] in their sidebar and your blog banners across the top. :) But, it seems like recently you have really blossomed both personally and in your writing.

I always loved reading your articles at CWO, and they were great, but now it's like you have such a passion for what you are writing. I notice a huge change in you, and I think you are incredible.

Blessings,

Joy

Joy,

Your words are such an encouragement to me. You've seen me grow as a writer from our days at The Internet Cafe, and now as we continue to minister through our blogs.

I started CWO because I wanted to get published. I thought it would be a great writing project for a few friends and I, but then I found myself in the middle of a ministry--a ministry that, as you know, grew quickly and became more than I could handle on my own.

While I knew all the right things to say--and yes, believed them--I didn't feel compelled to reach women the way I do today.

It sounds cliché, but I say this with deepest sincerity: it really is only by God's grace that I write. If I couldn't minister to women on the topic of marriage I would grieve a great loss. I pray for His continued grace.

I feel a calling on my life to do this, which is far different than the place that I came from of wanting to write.

And then I see you, Joy, carving out words in your corner of the blogosphere, year after year while growing stronger in faith. I see an authentic woman affecting the hearts of all those who pass through. I thank God that I'm blessed with your fellowship, and with the words that you offer. You are a gift.
How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!”
~ Isaiah 52:7

You are loved by an almighty God,

Darlene
